McDonald Mariga, Kenya’s only Champions League winner, has revisited his time under legendary coach José Mourinho, following the tactician’s recent appointment at Benfica—his first Portuguese club role since leaving Porto in 2004.
Mariga played under Mourinho during Inter Milan’s historic 2009/10 treble-winning season. He made 13 appearances that year, including eight in Serie A and three in the Champions League. Notably, he featured in high-stakes matches against Chelsea, CSKA Moscow, and the unforgettable 1-0 semi-final loss to Barcelona. Though he didn’t play in the final against Bayern Munich, which Inter won 2-0, Mariga remains etched in the club’s golden era.
Mourinho’s emotional departure from Inter was marked by his desire to avoid a public farewell. “I ran away—I went to the bus to say goodbye, and I didn't even shake one hand,” he told BBC Sport. “If I walk into a full San Siro, if I walk into the Duomo full of people, I think I wouldn't go to Real Madrid.”
Mariga, now FKF vice president, joined a distinguished list of African stars mentored by Mourinho, including Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, and John Obi Mikel. Speaking on SuperSport, he described Mourinho as “like a father,” praising his patience, passion for player development, and relentless demand for excellence.
