Investigators say Mwabe ran a sophisticated cyber fraud operation under the guise of being a cybersecurity consultant. When detectives raided his home, they recovered a safe, a money-counting machine, and what they described as a fully equipped computer lab.
But Mwabe’s digital footprint shows the warning signs were always there. His Facebook timeline is littered with hints: a profile branded with a keyboard, posts celebrating victories in cybersecurity competitions, and a 2018 photo of him in a hacker’s mask with two laptops, referencing “PwnStorm,” a notorious Russian hacking collective.
By his own account, he was a self-taught cybersecurity engineer. But to authorities, he was a rising cybercriminal whose skills had finally been turned against the system.
Now facing charges under Kenya’s Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act and theft under the Penal Code, Mwabe’s future will be decided in court — not behind a computer screen.
