Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has committed to fully supporting the family of Albert Ojwang, a blogger who died in police custody after being arrested over a controversial social media post.
On Wednesday, Sakaja met Ojwang’s family at City Hall, including his parents, widow, and two-year-old son. He revealed that Ojwang had been part of his media team, frequently working as an influencer.
“I have known Albert for a long time,” Sakaja stated. “His social media presence shows he was a personal influencer. We will stand by his family through this journey.”
Sakaja pledged to cover all burial costs, fund the education of Ojwang’s son, George Miles, and settle the outstanding college fees for his widow, who is studying for a diploma in community health.
“This young man deserves justice,” the Governor emphasized. “We will secure his son’s future and ensure his widow completes her studies.”
Additionally, Sakaja promised to provide employment for Ojwang’s widow upon her graduation. “She is in her final semester, and once she completes her training, we will ensure she gets a job with the County,” he affirmed.
To offer long-term support, the Governor also committed to rallying friends to purchase land in Homa Bay and build rental units for Ojwang’s parents, enabling them to generate sustainable income.
“We want true justice for Albert,” Sakaja declared. “His son George is too young to understand what has happened, and he will never see his father again. As a country, we cannot continue like this.”
Ojwang was arrested last Friday in Homa Bay on allegations of “false publication” and later transferred to Nairobi, where he was detained at Central Police Station. Police initially claimed he was found unconscious in his cell due to self-inflicted injuries.
However, an autopsy conducted by five pathologists contradicted this account, revealing that Ojwang had suffered severe head trauma, neck compression, and multiple soft tissue injuries—suggesting he was assaulted while in custody.
Police had earlier stated that preliminary investigations indicated Ojwang had repeatedly struck his head against a wall, but the postmortem results have raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death
